The 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, are in Excel format (.xls) and each contains 4 worksheets corresponding to:

  1. Country names and codes, exchange rates, population (in millions) and super-country weights
  2. Price levels for detailed categories (PPP / exchange rate)
  3. Real expenditures total at international prices (local $ / PPP)
  4. Nominal expenditures total at exchange rates (local $ / exchange rate)

The 1996 benchmark data are available in compressed (.zip) format.  Once saved,  these files will need to be 'unzipped'. Your computer may do this automatically; if not you will  need to download and install a program such as Winzip, Pkzip, or Zipit (for Macs). 

For the users who downloaded the 1996 benchmark data before June 28, 2005, please note that there are some changes in the excel files.  The data in the 27th row "Restaurants, cafes and hotels" were updated. 

Also, please note: the benchmark exchange rates refer to the year when the study took place.  If there have been currency reforms, then the exchange rate in PWT 6.1 may differ from the benchmark exchange rate.  It could well be the case in some of the other benchmarks too, e.g., Brazil for 1975.
